On Paper – Mandalas

Often circular with design elements radiating outward from a center point (similar to the image reflected inside a kaleidoscope) many traditions use the mandala to symbolize the cosmos, harmony, mystery and wisdom, to invoke a sense of calm or as an aid to meditation.

Examples can be as diverse as Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs, rose windows, and often appear in Hindu and Buddhist art.

The radial form found abundantly in nature has inspired countless designs of decorative as well as functional items such a sundials, jewelry, children’s whirligigs, even painted circus wagon wheels.
